Connectivity Test

Option 1 - Ping Test

With the HOSTS file or DNS configuration in place (see connectivity) you should be able to ping the server by its NetBIOS name.  Click Start, Run, type CMD and press Enter to launch a command prompt window. Type the following at the prompt

PING MAIL

and press Enter. You should receive 4 replies. If you receive no replies or an error message about an unknown host, usually the cause is a file extension on the HOSTS file name (see connectivity).

In most cases you should not waste your time trying to set up Outlook unless and until you can successfully ping the server. However, if you're behind a firewall, many firewalls prevent ping traffic. If that is the case, you will not be able to ping anything. To verify this situation, try to ping www.yahoo.com. If you can't ping Yahoo, you probably have a firewall in the way, or another network problem.

If you have installed the hosts file intended for use with VPN, remember you will not be able to get replies to your pings unless the VPN is connected.

Option 2 - Browser Test

There is another test you can use if a firewall interferes with your ability to ping. Pull up a browser window and try to go to the Internet address:

http://Mail

If you have successfully configured NetBIOS name resolution, you will see the Junctionbox homepage. If not, you will see an error message.
