Working Offline
Vs.
Working Online

Outlook 2003 has revolutionized this issue with the new feature called Cached Exchange Mode. We highly recommend Cached Exchange Mode and Outlook 2003. It provides the best of both worlds, you work as if you're online, but with a local copy of everything for when you're disconnected, and at the speed of your machine instead of the speed of your network connection. Our customers are encouraged to contact us for a download link and upgrade themselves. If you're stuck for the moment with an older version of Outlook, this discussion of working offline is still relevant to you.

Outlook (versions prior to Outlook 2003) can work with your Exchange server profile in either online or offline mode. These modes are independent of whether you actually have an active Internet connection on your machine at any given moment. You may have a good Internet connection, and still be working in Outlook's offline mode.

When you're working in the offline mode, you will see the offline mode indicator in the lower right hand corner of Outlook. See the illustration below. There is no online mode indicator. If you're in the online mode, the offline mode indicator will not be visible.

There are certain things you can only do when working online, and there are also advantages to working offline. It is important to understand the difference, and learn how to switch between the two modes.

Switching between online and offline mode is accomplished by restarting Outlook, and specifying "Connect" or "Work Offline" when prompted.

The first time you use Outlook, you must work online. Synchronize all folders at least once while working online before attempting to work offline.

Configuring Outlook with an offline folder file protects you against network downtime, and automatically keeps an up-to-date copy of all your data, stored on your local hard disk.
